In memory of Volodymyr Makarenko

On April 28, 2026, at the age of 69, our colleague Volodymyr Vasylovych Makarenko passed away. He was a distinguished Ukrainian soil scientist, agroecologist, and agrochemist, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences (Ph.D.), and Associate Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences and Geomorphology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

In 1980, Volodymyr Vasylovych graduated from the Ukrainian Order of the Red Banner of Labour Agricultural Academy with a degree in Agrochemistry and Soil Science, earning the qualification of Scientific Agronomist and Agrochemist–Soil Scientist. In 1991, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation at the O. N. Sokolovsky Institute for Soil Science and Agrochemistry (Kharkiv). His thesis, entitled “The Influence of Long-Term Fertilizer Application on the Fertility of Dark Gray Forest Soil and Apple Productivity in the Northern Forest-Steppe Zone of the Ukrainian SSR,” was completed in the field of agrochemistry under the supervision of Professor A. P. Lisoval.

Volodymyr Vasylovych’s professional career was diverse and multifaceted, yet always closely connected with his chosen field. During nearly 30 years of professional activity, he served as an agronomist, researcher at the Institute of Horticulture of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences, Deputy Director for Production at Agrokhimservice LLC, lecturer at the National Agricultural University, and Head of the Department of Agriculture and Agroecology within the Presidium Office of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences.

From 2009 to 2019, Volodymyr Vasylovych worked as an Associate Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences and Geomorphology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He was a highly qualified specialist, an accomplished scholar, and a gifted teacher who genuinely loved his profession. For many years, he supervised students’ field training practice at the Kaniv Nature Reserve.

Volodymyr Vasylovych will be remembered as an intelligent and kind-hearted person with a subtle sense of humor. His lectures were always distinguished by their depth, clarity, and lively interaction with students. He was a beloved teacher for many generations of students, inspiring and supporting them throughout their academic journey.

The bright memory of Volodymyr Vasylovych will forever remain in the hearts of his colleagues, students, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
